About

After more than 25 years’ experience in the field of mental health and vocational rehabilitation, Karen Theunissen remains passionate about her life’s work. She has a special interest in conditions which are viewed as complex, often misunderstood and labelled as difficult to manage by medical practitioners, family members, employers and insurers. The insights she gains from patients in her clinical practice helps her make realistic recommendations and energises her to give back in mentoring other therapists. She practices different therapeutic techniques, favouring Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and trauma-focused interventions. The mental health pandemic has urged her to become a suicide prevention practitioner, with support staff committed to the same values of compassionate care.

She has performed more than 3000 work assessments for insurance, employer and psycho-legal purposes and trained more than 250 occupational therapists in performing mental health FCEs. She has a passion for assisting persons to return to work, and therefore assists with rehabilitation specific with this aim in mind. On the flipside, she also assists employers to ensure that employees with health conditions work in a productive manner, and therefore consults on matters pertaining to poor work performance and behavioural issues. She has consulted and trained widely on the topic. For queries, please contact us.
